At Coastal Asbestos, we pride ourselves on our expertise and ability to take on challenging asbestos removal projects that require technical innovation and a strong commitment to safety. One of our most recent and significant achievements was the asbestos removal job we completed for the Gold Coast City Council, which not only showcased our team’s dedication but also earned us the prestigious Workplace Health and Safety Excellence Award. Here’s a look at this award-winning project and the methods we used to safely remove asbestos from a complex sewage pump station.
The Challenge: Asbestos in a Critical Sewage Pump Station
Our team was called upon by Gold Coast City Council to manage the removal of asbestos from a sewage pump station located in Burleigh. These pump stations are essential pieces of infrastructure in cities, used to pump sewage through a series of wells and pipes before it reaches treatment plants. Unfortunately, many of these stations, built decades ago, contained asbestos, including 450mm asbestos pipes that ran down 13 meters into the well.
The challenge was not just the presence of asbestos but the environment in which it was located. The sewage pump station had areas with explosive gases like sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid, adding complexity and risk to the removal process.

Innovative Techniques for Safe Asbestos Removal
Given the nature of the project, we knew that ensuring safety for our team was paramount. The confined space, hazardous gases, and asbestos materials required a carefully planned approach. Here’s a look at some of the innovative methods and equipment we used to complete the project:
- Airlock System and Gas Management:
We worked closely with the Gold Coast Council to manage the hazardous gases in the pump station. To clear the toxic gases, they raised the sewerage level to force the gas out, ensuring the space was safe for our team. Once the area was safe, we were able to start the asbestos removal. - Rope Access Technicians (Rope Techs):
Due to the confined space and the inability to use scaffolding, we brought in local rope access technicians to safely reach areas 14 meters below ground. These technicians were trained in asbestos safety, and we supervised them throughout the process to ensure strict safety protocols were followed. - Asbestos Removal from Asbestos Pipes:
One of the more challenging aspects of the job was the removal of asbestos pipes from the well. These pipes ran from the bottom of the well to the extraction fan and passed through the roof. We employed a safe method of isolating the pipes by backfilling with material to prevent any asbestos debris from falling into the well during removal. - Three-Stage Air Monitoring:
To ensure the air quality remained safe throughout the removal process, we used state-of-the-art air monitoring equipment. This system allowed us to track and manage the air quality, ensuring no asbestos fibres were present in the air during and after the job. - Protective Gear and Safety Protocols:
Our team used full PPE, including breathing apparatus similar to scuba gear, to protect against both asbestos and the hazardous gases present in the environment. This ensured their safety throughout the removal process.

The Results: Award-Winning Safety and Precision
The project was completed on time, on budget, and most importantly, safely. We removed the asbestos and secured the site for future use without any risk to the public or workers. This success not only marked a significant achievement for Coastal Asbestos but also earned us the Workplace Health and Safety Excellence Award from Master Builders Gold Coast. Competing against some of the largest companies in Australia, our innovative and safety-focused approach set us apart, and we are incredibly proud of our team for this accomplishment.
