We often get asked, what is so important about getting samples tested in a laboratory as opposed to having them tested onsite with a handheld device?
Having asbestos samples tested in a NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities Australia) is the only legally recognised form of asbestos testing in Australia. The benefits of laboratory testing are:

Asbestos was used in Australia from the 1940’s right up until the total ban in 2005. Asbestos was also used in over 3000 products. It was called the “miracle mineral“ and was used in everything including:

- wiring

Yes, but extreme caution is required. We recommend professional collection to avoid exposure.

How do I know if my property contains asbestos?
Many homes built before 1990 contain asbestos. The best way to confirm is through professional asbestos testing, where samples are collected and analysed in a NATA laboratory.
Where is asbestos commonly found in homes and buildings?
Asbestos can be found in walls, ceilings, roofing, guttering, downpipes, rainheads fences, vinyl flooring, insulation, eaves, pipes, drains, compressed sheet flooring ,fake brick cladding , cladding , fuse boxes , fuses, garden ornaments and pots, and sheds and out buildings.
How can I tell if a material contains asbestos just by looking at it?
It is impossible to confirm by sight alone. Professional testing in a NATA laboratory is the reliable way to confirm it.

What does fibro or asbestos sheeting look like?
Fibro, also called asbestos cement or AC sheeting, is a flat or corrugated grey cement sheet often used for walls, eaves, fences, roofs, bathrooms and laundries. It usually contains about 5 to 20 per cent asbestos, but modern fibre cement sheeting looks almost identical, so laboratory testing is the way to confirm it.
Look for it in homes built before 1990, especially in bathrooms, laundries, sheds and garages.

Do vinyl floor tiles or lino contain asbestos?
They can. Vinyl floor tiles, vinyl sheet flooring and the backing or glue underneath, installed before about 1990, may contain asbestos. The City of Gold Coast says to treat them as asbestos unless tested. Have a NATA-accredited laboratory test them before lifting or sanding old flooring.

I called up to get the stipple in my ceiling tested for asbestos. After hearing about how some companies swap samples and to be wary of business that test for asbestos (so they can get a demo job), from the moment I spoke to Karen and Chris I knew I could trust them and feel at ease. The owner of coastal asbestos came out and quoted the job which I though was great. He went through the whole process in detail which put our minds at ease. His guys turned up early and were ready to go. They went through the works process and explained what they were going to do. All work place health and safety were used and area was barricaded of with all correct signs in place.
