Asbestos Pipe Removal 14 Meters Down a Sewer Well

Asbestos pipe removal is one of the services we have had a lot to do with this in the last few years with all the infrastructure upgrades on the Gold Coast we have been involved in the removal of acm pipes form every size starting at 75mm right up to 600mm in diameter. Handling asbestos pipe, no matter what size it is its all the same as long as its horizontal when you get a call about asbestos pipes in a sewer well everything changes.

It was no ordinary sewage well it was the main pump station with 1 million litres an hour going thru it and it was over fourteen meters deep. The asbestos pipe we removed was 450mm in diameter and weighed around twenty-seven kilograms a meter. There were two in the dry well and one in the wet well and because of the condition of the wet well pipe it was declared friable by occupational hygienists.

The brief was very involved and there were so many conditions put on the job by the client, we were able to come up out of the box solutions compliance and safety were the two main factors. This was the test and we passed with flying colours. The access to the bottom of the well was not to be blocked in any way this required us to come up with a solution that was new to the clients. When we first proposed sending rope access technicians into the well there was a little push back once they realised that because of the restriction they put on us it was the only way.

This was the easy part of the asbestos pipe removal; the next challenge required the safe removal of the friable asbestos wet well pipe. Being over the running wet well we had added hazards we had the risk of explosive gases from the sewer and the fact that nothing could be dropped into the wet well under any circumstances. The fact that the pipe was crumbling and still attached to a Failed deodoriser unit meant that we were at a distinct disadvantage.

Working in A class conditions requires an air tight enclosure as soon as we opened the pipe we were no longer in an air tight enclosure and we risked dropping debris into the pumps causing them to fail and millions of litres of raw sewage to flood the streets.

After five days we were triumphant the pipes were removed safely without incident or damage to the sewer pumps the meticulous planning and hours of meetings had paid off. There were more than a few untested methods as this was the very first of its kind the client had ever completed they had trusted us, and we had delivered on time and on budget.

The skills involved in this job were friable and non-friable asbestos removal, working in confined spaces, working at heights, safe use of breathing equipment asbestos transport and air monitoring.

The Global Skill Shortage And how you Can Help! Will you?

The Global Skill Shortage And how you Can Help! Will you?

There is a world wide skills shortage and apprenticeship numbers are at an all time low there seems to be no clear strategy to turn the tide.No government task force to ensure that there will be somebody to build the offices they sit in, and indeed the polling

booths with which they need to be voted in to power with. There is an inconvenient truth out there and that is the shortage in skilled trades is being left on the back burner to sort it self out. Now I know there are more noble pursuits like saving the wales and the reef. But how are you going to save the wales and the reef without skilled trades to build the boats and equipment to do this let alone building to study the data?

If you look around you and take in your surroundings you need to realise that everything that is not a natural geographical feature, flora or fauna was put there by a skilled trade. Let that sink in every building, road car, the mobile phone even the kitchen sink and this is just the stuff you can see. When the garage door goes up when the beer is cold and when you can watch the footy down the pub with your mates all built by skilled trades, even the robots that mike stuff all built by skilled trades.

So where did it all go so wrong? In my eyes its simple. I blame the media and the entertainment industry they are more likely to portray trades as being lazy, untrustworthy and incompetent. And the public has brought into it because by in large they believe what the see on TV. Trade jobs are portrayed as dead ends, dirty jobs not something to aspire to.

I had a mate remark to me recently he was happy for his son to get into a trade as long as” he realised that it wasn’t going to be long term on the tools “. He didn’t want his son to get a dead end trade job, where he would be stuck slogging it out on the tools for the rest of his life. You know what what if he likes it? What if he loves the fact that ensuring the plumbing is done correctly in a family home, so that the family that lives there will have a lifetime supply of freshwater and more importantly a flushing toilet and shower and bathe in to keep them healthy.

I listen to a lot of gurus like all sprouting about having a “legacy” leaving the world a better place contributing to humanity. Well you know what I have had twenty two year olds work for me who have never heard of Mick Jagger or Neil Armstrong. If you want to build a “ legacy “ become a tradie and build something. I was a metal roofer for over 20 years my kids are sick to death of me pointing out all the houses, factories and shopping centres I put the roof on that is my legacy. All the families, businesses that have a roof over their heads, many of them they have no idea who I am but I am pretty sure they are glad they have a “roof over their heads” shelter is one of the simplest human needs and without skilled tradies it can not happen. It’s the great Australian dream home ownership so you can “put a roof over your head”

So if you want to get guys and girls to get enthusiastic about skilled trades you have to change the pitch, because you get what you pitch for. If you are constantly running down skilled trades then why would any parent see it as a great option for their kids? There are so many trade based business out so many careers in the building and construction industry, this is how it should be marketed not just become a tradie which there is nothing wrong with. But there are clear career paths in the building and construction industry. Some are on the tools, business owners, project managers, builders even sales the list is endless. I have a mate at Mawson station in the South Pole has a chippy this is where a carpentry apprenticeship led him, what an awesome opportunity.

The message should be loud and clear “ a career in the building and construction industry “ with clear pathways to small business ownership, project management, sales executives and builders to name a few. The government is always asking what incentives should we use to help the get more people into trades. Well how about changing the pitch from becoming a bricklayer, plumber, carpenter, roofer to start your career in the building and construction industry and mapping out what a career path looks like. We should start with the end in mind, we should put the guys up on a pedestal that have made it, maybe there should have more celebrity tradies.

There are so many exceptional trades business owners that are living a life by design because of the flexibility trade business offer.

Small business is the biggest employer in Australia it is the engine room of the Australian economy. So many small business owners are pillars of the community supporting everything from the under 8’s footy team, community groups surf life saving clubs just about every small club, group or charity in Australia is supported by small business and a lot of this comes from trades based business.

Don’t just throw dumb money at this, build a clear strategy that encourages people to get excited about a career in the trades coupled with more palaces in tafe and financial support for the industry. We have the opportunity to lead the world in this mind shift, we live in a country that is what the rest of the world knows as “ the lucky country “ we have a lifestyle that is the envy of billions of people around the world. We have a great industry that’s for sure now, but how is it going to look into the future? Who is going to “ put the roof over your Grandchildren’s head “ if we don’t get this right now.

Asbestos Awareness and Civil Operators

Asbestos Awareness and Civil Operators

Australia was the biggest per capita users of asbestos in the world. This means Australia has a huge deadly asbestos legacy. A legacy that will remain for many years to come and ensuring the job security of asbestos experts well into the future and that asbestos will remain a part of every major infrastructure upgrade in Australia for generations to come.

Asbestos was used underground for the same reasons as above ground. Asbestos is strong, cheap, chemically inert. It became the go-to material and heavily favoured by civil companies and utility and service providers for these very reasons. To name a few asbestos pipes were extensively used for sewers, water, drainage.

The modern plant and equipment operator is in the frontline and asbestos awareness training is becoming more and more requested especially by tier one businesses. Asbestos awareness training for the machine and plant operators is readily available online or can be delivered in a group setting.

Coastal Asbestos is offering a specific asbestos awareness training program for the civil industry asbestos can be found in just about anything that was used in the past things like Telstra pits, water mains, electrical conduits and many many more applications. How Much Does It Cost To Have Asbestos Removed?

How Much Does It Cost To Have Asbestos Removed?

We get asked this a lot, and there is no straight answer. I know what you are thinking here we go again the old “ how long is a piece of string “ argument. That is why we always recommend a site meeting for every job so we can tailor the job to suit your specific needs.

Weight ads cost because we pay by weight at the registered waste facility this is a cost that is totally out of our control. We are at the mercy of the waste facility operators. Next year in Queensland the State Government is imposing a waste levy that will double the cost of some jobs. It is something we are fighting, we see no benefit to the community, and believe it will result in a spike in Ilegal dumping.

Engaging, credible specialist asbestos removal businesses is the very best way to protect the environment. Surely you don’t want the asbestos from your fence to end up in the bush dumped illegally to save a few bucks? Because we all pay for this, in the long run, Queensland councils spent eleven million dollars on cleaning up illegally dumped asbestos last year, you and I pay for this both financially and thru increased health risks.

Acess directly affects cost because of labour; it just takes longer to complete even the simplest job. Access varies from job to job things like multi-story homes; high-rise buildings can add time to the asbestos removal process. We are constantly looking for efficiencies the introduction of mini excavators for asbestos fence removal has been a huge win for our customers; our tipper trailer has been great, it gets into really tight spaces and allows us to get so much closer than skips ever would. The adoption of cloud-based job management systems has allowed us to slash admin costs improving communication and the amount of information like, photos, video and even hand-drawn sketches which give us an incredible amount of information about each job.

So to answer the number question “How much does it cost to get asbestos removal done at my place “ our response is “ How about we come to the site and meet with you so we can give you the very best price we can to suit your needs“. An asbestos tax on new building products

The head of the Australian Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency Peter Tighe has suggested that a tax on new building products “something less than 1% “should be imposed to incentivise Australian homeowners to remove deadly asbestos from their family homes.

With the rise of renovation shows fuelling on of Australia’s favourite pastimes, home renovation. Comes an alarming third wave of asbestos related disease seen in home renovators. Asbestos related disease is on the rise and every year it claims 4000 lives much higher than even the road toll. The new tax is aimed squarely at turning the tide of the third wave of asbestos related disease in Australia.

Asbestos was used in Australian homes from the early 1940’s right up to its ban in 1985 . Worksafe Australia state that asbestos is likely to be found in homes built into the early 1990’s as many builders held on to stocks until they ran out instead of disposing them as required.

The only way to know 100% weather you have asbestos products in your family home is to have your home inspected and have an asbestos report compiled ,and any suspect products have them them tested in a Nationally Accredited Laboratory . Coastal Asbestos Removal are your local experts that can come over and harvest a sample for asbestos testing and later safe asbestos removal if required .

Our house rules reno TV

Our house rules reno TV

We were on Tv In the current season of OUR HOUSE RULES !

We are no strangers to innovation at Coastal Asbestos Removal and have built a reputation on creating solutions, for asbestos removal projects that require a bit of lateral thinking. The kind of thinking that comes from a intimate understanding of the rules and regulations, and over 20 years of experience in the industry and continual self development .

When we were contacted by Symcorp Building services to be involved in the current series of Our House Rules there were 2 conditions

  1. We had to remove the asbestos linings from two bathrooms and the laundry safely and within the current workplace health and safety regulations .
  2. We had to ensure the workflow of the project was not going to be interrupted by us this was not negotiable.

Number 1

This was easy it’s our day to day systems and procedures that ensure this , except for the golden rule and that is Nobody can be onsite while we work . If you have ever seen these reno shows there can be up to 50 people onsite so for us having to work around this posed a few challenges . We are well versed in removing asbestos in sensitive environments because we are regularly called to Pindarra Private hospital to remove asbestos for renovations ,they always let us shut down the rooms either side of where we are working so we have plenty of room to set up . That would have been nice .

Number 2

Always up for a challenge we met with the producers of the show Chris from Symcorp and the onsite safety consultant and pitched our plan . A plan that kept 50 people safe amongst the chaos of a renovation TV show, while we removed 1.5 tonnes of asbestos from 3 rooms on two levels of the home. Then get it out to our custom built trailer for transport. All without slowing down the workflow simple! Did I mention that it was about 35 degree that day and 100% humidity managing hydration and heat stress was just thrown in for good measure. The whole thing took 7 men 5 hours to complete ,with myself on watch outside the work area just to make sure nobody’s safety was compromised. The onsite safety consultant was carefully looking over our whole operation ready to step in and close the job down if he believed there were any safety concerns.

I was really impressed by the producers of the show through the whole process, they took the time to go through how the show worked with the whole team of tradies and stressed the importance of discretion. Highlighting the fact that in years of producing the Our House Rules show they had never made a tradie look stupid, or in any way devalued the contribution or expertise of tradesman and women brought to their show . It was a real pressure cooker situation the went seamlessly . The experience has given me a whole different appreciation for reality tv and the poor contestants that are so far out of their comfort zones .
